In the intro of the film we meet the protagonist. He come off as very vain, and a bit busy. He is on his way to a resturant/bar to meet some associates of his. He is already running late. He ends up being mistaken for someone else, who two armed men are looking for, after he raises his hand to use the telegram. They escort him out and kidnap him at gun point. This is one of the many recurring themes of thrillers, an innocent ordinary man, thrown into an awkward and weird situation due to a case of mistaken identity or whatnot. This intro makes us wonder who the man they were really looking for is, and how Roger Thornhill is going to get out of this situation.
During the course of the intro, in the background we can see the two armed men enter, although they are not in focus, at first it would be easy to mistake them or background characters.
