Memento is a film directed by Christopher Nolan. In the intro of the film we see the titles appear over a hand holding a photograph. The photograph is of a very bloody scene, a murder. The hand starts shaking the photograph, and we see that the photograph is beginning to fade. The man holding the photograph then takes another photograph using the now blank photo of a dead man. We then see everything in reverse, a bullet goes back into the gun, we then see the man's final moment in revers as he screams just before he is shot dead by the man holding the gun.
After watching the intro, I noted that it was very mysterious, and I didn't quite understand what was happening. This adds mystery to the film, as I want to keep watching to find out why this has taken place. To me, this intro is an example of a near perfect opening as all I wanted to do was keep watching.
After I found out that the main character has short term memory loss (he cannot process any new memories) I realised that the photograph fading is perhaps a metaphor for the fact his memories fade after each day.
